Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is the most representative masterpiece of the entire Italian Renaissance and one of the most important works of art in the world. Pope Sistius IV, whose name it bears, had it built, commissioning artists such as Botticelli,Perugino and Girlandaio to fresco the side walls of the chapel with stories of the prophet Moses and Jesus.

The Vault of Michelangelo

Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to decorate the ceiling. The Tuscan master, basically a sculptor, created an enormous fresco there that is widely considered his great masterpiece: ‘the Vault’ depicts the stories of Genesis surrounded by giant Prophets and Sibyls. After 25 years, Michelangelo was called upon again to fresco the wall behind the altar with the work “The Judgement Universal“.
