Situated in the heart of Vatican City, the Basilica is easily accessible and serves as a focal point for pilgrims and tourists alike.

The Architectural Marvel

St. Peter’s Basilica is renowned for its stunning architecture, a masterpiece of Renaissance design. The Basilica’s construction began in 1506 and was completed in 1626, involving some of the greatest architects of the time, including Michelangelo, who designed the iconic dome. Michelangelo’s Pietà, a delicate yet powerful marble sculpture, is one of the highlights. Created when Michelangelo was just 24 years old, this sculpture is a testament to his genius and skill. Another notable work is Bernini’s Baldachin, a monumental bronze canopy that marks St. Peter’s tomb and exemplifies the Baroque drama of the space. These works, along with many others, offer a glimpse into the rich artistic heritage housed within the Basilica.

The Papal Tombs

The Papal Tombs, located beneath the Basilica, provide a solemn and reflective space where many popes are laid to rest. This beautiful basilica is truly worth visiting! More than just a visit, it is an inner experience that allows you to truly feel the spirituality of the place. However, we had to work hard to visit it! We had booked tickets online with reserved access for 10:30 a.m., but when we arrived, there were lots of people there. When I pointed out to the staff that I had reserved access tickets, they replied that they were not valid because they had combined the queues, so everyone had to wait regardless of whether they had paid more for reserved access! Fortunately, we went to the office where we had picked up the tickets and they were very kind: they changed the day and time for us and in the end we were able to visit the Basilica.

Admission to St. Peter’s Basilica is free, but the queue is endless. On site, “Skip the Line” tickets were offered for €25 each (including children). I googled and found Headout – I paid €42 for myself and my two children (instead of €75). Or rather, €0. The lady was a little hard to find—she was wearing a red jacket but with a different logo. The meeting point for picking up the online tickets (a slight contradiction) was a 5-minute walk away. We had to wait a short while, but in the meantime we were given a very nice, detailed explanation of the queue, etc., and had a short chat. Access (another 5-minute walk back to St. Peter’s Square) took less than 15 minutes, including security checks.

The entry queues even for people with pre-paid short queue tickets were poorly organised with no signs and ended up being long queues. In the queue we were treated a bit like cattle being quashed and herded together and it was a very unfortable experience. Even when we eventually arrived at the entrance we still had another long wait to get through security. Eventually we arrived inside St Peters after 2 hours of queuing. I bought short queue tickets so that my 82 year old grandmother with me would not have to stand for a long time in the queue. In the end it was all a big con. with these on-line short queue ticket sales.

As we were standing in line listening to the Guide my fiancee (who i had JUST asked to marry me IN the Sistine Chapel the previous Sunday before) turned to me and exclaimed as to how much she liked the information provided and in general HOW he did it and how “cute” this older gentleman was 🙂 we LOVED the dome climb and using the elevator was the best call EVER!! OF COURSE the Basilica was STUPENDOUS (brought me to tears at one point) and the audio tour for it was helpful and informative. I will definitely be recommending you to friends that are visiting soon! Thank you and keep up the good work! Tom and Belinda

The visit was great. We arrived at the square and the girls from the company registered our tickets on their phones and gave us printed tickets with QR codes to present at the door. As we had booked a guide, they escorted us to the door and left us there. On the way, we talked to one of the guides, who gave me lots of information and was very, very friendly. EXCELLENT SERVICE.
