Discover the Colosseum: a journey through history

The Colosseum, located in the heart of Rome, is the main attraction included in this ticket. As one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world, the Colosseum stands as a testament to the architectural and engineering prowess of ancient Rome. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore this iconic amphitheater, gaining a deeper understanding of its historical significance and the role it played in Roman society.

The architectural marvel of the Colosseum

The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, was commissioned in AD 70-72 by Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty as a gift to the Roman people. It was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir, Titus. The structure could hold up to 80,000 spectators and was used for gladiatorial contests, public spectacles, and other forms of entertainment.

The Colosseum’s design features a complex system of vaults and arches, showcasing the ingenuity of Roman engineering. Visitors can marvel at the grandeur of the amphitheater, imagining the vibrant atmosphere during events that captivated the citizens of ancient Rome.

The Arena: heart of the spectacles

The Colosseum Arena was the central stage for the various spectacles held within the amphitheater. This area was where gladiators fought, wild animal hunts took place, and mock naval battles were staged. The arena floor was originally made of wood and covered with sand to absorb blood.

Beneath the arena was a complex network of tunnels and chambers, known as the hypogeum, where animals and gladiators were held before contests. Access to the arena offers visitors a unique perspective, allowing them to stand where the action once unfolded and gain a deeper appreciation for the scale and intensity of the events that took place.

Historical significance and legacy

The Colosseum is not only an architectural wonder but also a symbol of the cultural and social dynamics of ancient Rome. It served as a venue for public entertainment, reinforcing the power and influence of the emperors who sponsored the games. The Colosseum also played a role in the political landscape, as emperors used the spectacles to gain favor with the populace.

Over the centuries, the Colosseum has endured natural disasters, neglect, and repurposing, yet it remains a powerful symbol of Rome’s enduring legacy. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting millions of visitors from around the world who come to witness its grandeur and learn about its storied past.

The night tour around the colloseum was really good, especially when the crowds start to thin. Our tour guide Sergei literally knew everything and told us so much about Roma that we wouldn’t have known otherwise…

Thank you, Bianca! ❤️ In the past, whenever my boyfriend and I joined guided tours, the guides often seemed bored or boring, and not very good at answering questions. This time was completely different. Having Bianca as our guide was a breath of fresh air – she was engaging, passionate, and truly exceptional. She brought the Colosseum to life through her storytelling, making history feel vivid and real. She answered every question clearly and casually, turning the whole tour into a friendly conversation rather than a formal lecture. We joined the 5:30 PM evening tour, which was perfect – the light was beautiful, and the heat was much more bearable. We absolutely loved every moment. Highly recommend both the evening tour and, above all, having Bianca as your guide!

Giuseppe was an outstanding guide! The in-depth and funny information he knew was incredible! He knew all the answers to anyone’s questions and was extremely engaging. Even my teenager really enjoyed hearing all the information and that’s no mean feat 😂 It was easy to find where to check in and we were very looked after from start to finish. The Colosseum itself was the most phenomenal place to see. It was, in every way, awe-inspiring.
