Discover Castel Sant’Angelo: unveiling Rome’s historical gem

Castel Sant’Angelo stands majestically on the banks of the Tiber River in Rome, a testament to the city’s rich historical tapestry. Originally commissioned by Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum, it later evolved into a formidable fortress and papal residence, reflecting the city’s dynamic history.

The mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian

Constructed around 135 AD, the structure was initially designed as a grand mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family. The cylindrical design was inspired by the Mausoleum of Augustus, symbolizing imperial power and legacy. Over time, the mausoleum became a revered resting place for subsequent emperors, marking its significance in Roman history. Visitors can explore the remnants of this ancient funerary monument, gaining insights into the architectural prowess of the Roman Empire.

The transformation into a fortress

In the 5th century, the mausoleum was repurposed as a military fortress to protect Rome from barbarian invasions. Its strategic location near the Vatican made it an ideal defensive structure. The fortress underwent several modifications, including the addition of fortified walls and military corridors. These enhancements highlight the medieval period’s emphasis on defense and security, offering visitors a glimpse into the military strategies of the time.

A Papal refuge and Renaissance residence

During the Renaissance, Castel Sant’Angelo served as a papal refuge, providing sanctuary for popes during times of political turmoil. The fortress was connected to the Vatican by a secret passageway, known as the Passetto di Borgo, ensuring the pope’s safety. The interior was adorned with Renaissance frescoes, reflecting the artistic and cultural revival of the era. Visitors can admire these artistic treasures, which add a layer of beauty and sophistication to the fortress’s historical narrative.

The guide was excellent, very interesting and informative. She explained and showed us how the Tomb and later Fortress changed throughout the ages, and the important events that shaped its history and the history of Rome. I really liked the context that she provided. She was very professional, not too fast or too slow, not too much information or too little, and all of it relevant.
