Castel Sant’Angelo, a monumental structure with a rich historical legacy, is located on the right bank of the Tiber River in Rome, just a stone’s throw away from the Vatican City. Originally constructed as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian in 135 AD, it has since evolved through the centuries, serving various roles from a fortress to a papal residence, and now a museum.

The Mausoleum’s Transformation

The journey of Castel Sant’Angelo from a mausoleum to a museum is a testament to its enduring significance in Roman history. Initially built as a grand tomb for Emperor Hadrian and his family, the structure’s imposing cylindrical design was inspired by the architectural styles of the time. Over the centuries, it was repurposed as a fortress to protect the city, and later as a papal refuge during times of conflict. Visitors today can explore the remnants of its past, including the Chamber of Ashes, where notable historical figures were once incarcerated.

Architectural Marvels and Artistic Treasures

As you ascend the spiral staircase of Castel Sant’Angelo, you’ll encounter a wealth of artistic and architectural wonders. Each room within the museum tells a story, with the Papal Residence offering a fascinating insight into the lives of the popes who once sought refuge within its walls.

Buying tickets in advance got us right in vs the long line to buy tickets. The audio guide was ok. At some point we just focused on the walking tour vs figuring out which audio file to play. Overall a decent experience. Well worth seeing especially the view from up top.

Learning about the different uses of the site, throughout the ages, was fascinating, as was the architecture. We also enjoyed the vantage point of Rome from the top. Well worth the visit.

When we presented our tickets, we were not allowed in, but had to walk around to locate some unmarked person by the bridge to validate our tickets. That is UNACCEPTABLE. We won’t use you again.
