The Colosseum, located in the heart of Rome, is a monumental symbol of ancient Roman engineering and culture. As the largest amphitheater ever built, it stands as a testament to the architectural prowess and societal grandeur of the Roman Empire.
The Colosseum’s history is as captivating as its structure. Originally commissioned by Emperor Vespasian in AD 70-72, it was completed by his successor, Titus, in AD 80. The amphitheater could hold up to 80,000 spectators, who gathered to witness gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, and even mock naval battles. Its design features a complex system of vaults and arches, which not only supported the massive structure but also facilitated efficient crowd movement.
The Colosseum’s most iconic feature is its elliptical shape, measuring 189 meters long and 156 meters wide, with a height of 48 meters. Visitors today can explore the first and second levels, gaining a sense of the grandeur that once captivated ancient Roman audiences.
Visitors to the Colosseum can marvel at the tiered seating that once accommodated thousands of spectators. The seating arrangement, divided into different sections, reflected the social hierarchy of ancient Rome. The lower tiers were reserved for the elite, while the upper levels were designated for the general public.
The on-site museum offers a deeper dive into the Colosseum’s history, showcasing artifacts such as gladiatorial armor and ancient Roman coins. Models and interactive displays provide a visual representation of the Colosseum’s original appearance and the events that took place within its walls. The Arena Floor, accessible with certain ticket options, offers a unique perspective from the center of the amphitheater, where gladiators once fought for their lives.
In addition to the Colosseum, this ticket includes access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, two of Rome’s most historically significant sites. The Roman Forum, once the center of political and social life in ancient Rome, is home to a wealth of ruins, including the Temple of Saturn, the Arch of Septimius Severus, and the Curia. Palatine Hill, one of the Seven Hills of Rome, offers stunning views of the city and is steeped in myth and history. According to legend, it was here that Romulus founded Rome. The ticket’s exclusive Arena Floor access provides a rare opportunity to stand where gladiators once battled, offering a truly immersive experience.

Great quick tour, so much information in a short amount of time. We had to get a train back to the cruise so only had a hour to spend at the colosseum. This fitted us perfectly, guide was very knowledgeable and provided us with a lovely tour.
